Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto Discuss Political Landscape, Constitutional Amendments
Islamabad, October 14 — Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari have engaged in discussions regarding the current political situation, with a particular focus on proposed constitutional amendments. The two leaders, representing two of Pakistan’s largest political parties, have been in contact twice over the past three days — first in a face-to-face meeting on Thursday, followed by a phone conversation on Sunday.
During their call, Bilawal updated Nawaz on the progress of discussions between the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and PPP concerning constitutional reforms. They also deliberated on efforts to build consensus among political parties regarding the 26th constitutional amendment.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser held a phone conversation with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Qaiser revealed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Fazlur Rehman supported PTI’s request to provide medical facilities to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in prison and allow him access to his personal physician.
Fazl also urged the PTI to postpone its planned October 15 protest due to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit being held in Islamabad.
Qaiser noted that PTI and JUI-F are in agreement on many points of the proposed constitutional amendment draft put forward by JUI-F. A meeting between the two parties is scheduled for October 17 to further discuss the draft. He assured Maulana Fazlur Rehman that PTI would present his suggestions to party leadership and communicate their decision afterward.
The ongoing conversations highlight the intricate negotiations among Pakistan’s major political parties as they navigate constitutional reforms and the broader political climate.
