Sindh Home Minister Orders Probe into Police Misconduct at Karachi Protest
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon to form a committee to investigate the alleged police brutality during a protest near the Karachi Press Club on Sunday. The protest was organized by women and journalists demonstrating against the killing of Dr. Shahnawaz.
Lanjar summoned IGP Memon on Monday to address the police’s actions and emphasized the need for an impartial investigation. He instructed Memon to ensure the probe is completed and a report submitted within three days. The minister also called for details on the policemen who were suspended following the incident.
Earlier, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza confirmed that departmental action was being taken against the police officers involved in the violent behavior, which has triggered outrage within the media community. He condemned the mistreatment, particularly against journalists who had identified themselves during the protest.
“Strict action will be taken against the police officials responsible for this misconduct,” Raza said, adding that such behavior, especially toward journalists, is unacceptable. He reiterated the strong bond between the police and the journalist community, describing it as “inseparable” like “Choli Daman” (meaning closely connected). Raza assured that the South Zone Police are committed to holding the responsible officers accountable and maintaining a respectful relationship with the media going forward.
This incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with media organizations demanding swift justice for those affected by the police’s actions.
