UK Government Declares Hassan Nawaz a Tax Defaulter
London – The United Kingdom (UK) government has officially declared Hassan Nawaz, son of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a tax defaulter. The updated list of defaulters has been published on the UK government’s official website.
According to details, Hassan Nawaz failed to pay £9.4 million in taxes for the period between April 5, 2015, and April 6, 2016. In response, the UK tax authority has imposed a penalty of £5.2 million on him, with the action formally documented on the government’s portal.
Legal experts indicate that despite Hassan Nawaz having declared bankruptcy a few months ago, UK authorities may still recover the penalty, as tax fraud fines are not subject to waivers under British law.
As of now, there has been no official response from Hassan Nawaz’s legal representatives regarding the matter.
Previous Acquittal in NAB References
Last year, an accountability court in Islamabad acquitted Hassan Nawaz and his brother, Hussain Nawaz, in three high-profile cases—the Avenfield, Flagship, and Al-Azizia references. Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the Islamabad accountability court announced the reserved verdict, clearing both brothers of any charges in these cases.
Previously, the court had granted bail to Hassan and Hussain Nawaz after they voluntarily surrendered before the accountability court.
