Karachi Reports Over 10,000 Street Crimes in First Two Months of 2025

KARACHI: Despite a 28.18% decline compared to the same period in 2024, Karachi recorded 10,356 incidents of street crime in the first two months of 2025, raising concerns about public safety.

According to police data, 12 citizens lost their lives, and 41 others sustained injuries while resisting robberies. During this period, criminals stole or snatched 2,806 mobile phones, 306 cars, and 7,244 motorcycles.

A breakdown of the crime statistics revealed an average of 48.4 mobile phone snatching incidents per day. Additionally, five cars were either stolen or snatched daily, while 125 motorcycles were taken by criminals.

Authorities claim that the overall crime rate has declined compared to last year, but residents continue to voice concerns over increasing insecurity and demand stricter law enforcement measures.

Meanwhile, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has pointed to challenges in combating the illegal weapons trade. Last year, CTD In-charge Raja Umar Khattab accused the Sindh home ministry of failing to cooperate in sharing crucial data regarding the weapons supply line in Karachi.

In an interview, Khattab stated that the Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police had tasked the CTD with investigating the flow of illegal arms in the province, particularly in Karachi. However, despite repeated attempts, the Sindh home ministry allegedly did not provide the necessary data.

The CTD’s investigation revealed that 17 weapon dealers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were supplying illegal firearms to Karachi. These weapons were reportedly trafficked through two provinces via transport and online deliveries before reaching the port city.

As street crime remains a pressing issue, citizens urge authorities to take stricter action against criminal networks and improve law enforcement efforts in Karachi.
