Pakistan Marks Sixth Anniversary of ‘Operation Swift Retort’
Islamabad: Pakistan is commemorating the sixth anniversary of the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) successful military operation, ‘Operation Swift Retort,’ which took place on February 27, 2019. This operation marked a significant victory against India following the downing of an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jet over Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
The aerial engagement was Pakistan’s response to India’s airstrike in Balakot on February 26, 2019, when Indian military aircraft violated the Line of Control (LoC) from the Muzaffarabad sector and hastily retreated after releasing a payload in an open area. In retaliation, PAF jets crossed the LoC the following day, targeting Indian military positions before returning after issuing warning shots.
When India deployed fighter jets to engage Pakistani aircraft, the PAF executed a strategic counterattack, successfully downing two Indian fighter jets in an aerial dogfight. One of the pilots, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was flying a MiG-21 aircraft, was captured after his plane crashed in Pakistani territory. He was later released as a gesture of goodwill by Pakistan.
For their exceptional performance during the operation, PAF pilots were awarded military honors. Wing Commander Noman Ali Khan received the Sitara-e-Jur’at (Star of Valour), while Group Captain Faheem Ahmad Khan and Squadron Leader Hassan Mahmood Siddiqui were bestowed with the Tamgha-e-Jur’at (Medal of Valour).
Operation Swift Retort was not only a decisive and proportionate response to India’s aggression but also a reaffirmation of Pakistan’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. It underscored the operational readiness and excellence of Pakistan’s armed forces, reestablishing deterrence and maintaining complete operational dominance throughout the engagement.
In recognition of the bravery and professionalism displayed by the country’s armed forces, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, along with the service chiefs, paid tribute to their sacrifices. They reiterated their unwavering commitment to Pakistan’s national security and stability while continuing efforts to promote regional peace.
