PCB Addresses Security Breach After Fan Invades Pitch During Champions Trophy Match
Rawalpindi – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken serious note of a security breach that occurred during Monday’s ICC Champions Trophy match between New Zealand and Bangladesh, where a spectator entered the field of play.
The incident took place in Rawalpindi when an enthusiastic fan ran onto the pitch holding a photograph of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Hafiz Saad Hussain Rizvi and attempted to hug New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra. Pitch invasions, though not uncommon in global sports, raised security concerns during the high-profile tournament.
“The PCB has taken serious note of the security breach that occurred yesterday when a spectator entered the field of play. Ensuring the safety of players and officials remains our top priority,” the board stated.
The PCB further assured that it has engaged with local security agencies to strengthen access control measures and increase security personnel at all venues. The individual involved was arrested, presented in court, and permanently banned from entering any cricket stadium in Pakistan.
Following the match, Ravindra commented on the incident, expressing his hope that New Zealand would now become the crowd favorites for the remainder of the tournament. “The crowd’s been pretty good to us,” he said. “It’s just great to have a good crowd every time we play cricket, and it definitely elevates the atmosphere of each game.”
Despite the disruption, the match continued without further incident. Ravindra played a crucial role in New Zealand’s five-wicket victory over Bangladesh, scoring a brilliant 112. The win secured New Zealand’s place in the Champions Trophy semi-finals while eliminating hosts Pakistan from the tournament.
Pakistan, the 2017 Champions Trophy winners, suffered defeats to both New Zealand and India, marking a disappointing end to their campaign in the first ICC event they have hosted since the 1996 ODI World Cup.
