Court Orders One-Day Remand for Woman Suspected in Fatal Karsaz Road Accident
KARACHI – The City Court on Tuesday placed a woman, suspected of causing a fatal road accident on Karsaz Road, on a one-day physical remand. The special magistrate judge ordered that the suspect be produced in court on Wednesday with a comprehensive medical report.
The police investigation officer, Amir Altaf, had requested a seven-day remand for the suspect, identified as Natasha, who was involved in an accident that resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to five others on Monday.
Following the accident, Natasha was taken into custody by Police and Rangers, who also impounded her vehicle. She was then transported to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for treatment of a head injury.
The investigation officer informed the court that Natasha was not present due to her critical mental condition, as assessed by JPMC psychiatric specialist Dr. Chunni Laal. The doctor advised that she remain hospitalized and unfit to appear in court.
Natasha’s lawyer, Amir Mansoob, argued that his client has been undergoing psychiatric treatment for five years and was not in a state to appear in court. He explained that she had taken the vehicle without permission and had no recollection of the incident.
The court denied the lawyer’s request for bail, citing the suspect’s non-appearance and the special magisterial duty of the presiding judge. The court also questioned the legality of Natasha’s UK driving license in Pakistan, as the police had not yet confiscated it.
The hearing was adjourned until tomorrow, with the court set to further examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
