Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, a renowned Pakistani social entrepreneur and the founder of Akhuwat, has been honored with the Brain of the Year Award 2025 by The Brain Trust. The announcement was made by Grand Chessmaster and Chairman of The Brain Trust, Raymond Keene OBE, during a ceremony at the British House of Commons.

The Brain Trust, established in 1990 by Tony Buzan, the creator of Mind Maps, is an organization dedicated to improving global mental health through research, support, and funding. Its highest accolade, the “Brain of the Year Trophy,” is awarded annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to enhancing human cognitive and mental well-being.

Raymond Keene OBE highlighted that Dr. Saqib was chosen for his extraordinary services to the underprivileged people of Pakistan.

“As the founder of Akhuwat, the world’s largest Islamic microfinance organization, Dr. Saqib has redefined microfinance by offering interest-free loans to underserved communities,” said Keene.

Revolutionizing Microfinance
Founded in 2001 with just $100, Akhuwat has grown into a transformative force, disbursing over $1 billion in interest-free loans to more than 6 million families across Pakistan. Dr. Saqib’s work has empowered countless individuals by fostering economic independence and dignity among marginalised communities.

In its citation, The Brain Trust commended Dr. Saqib for his groundbreaking contributions to microfinance and global mental health.

“Dr. Saqib has not only alleviated poverty but has also uplifted the human spirit. His visionary leadership showcases how compassion and innovative thinking can tackle some of the world’s most urgent challenges,” the citation read.
