Punjab Allocates Rs 500 Million for Bombproof Vehicles to Protect Chinese Workers
In a move to bolster the security of Chinese nationals working on various projects across Punjab, the provincial government has decided to purchase bombproof vehicles. The decision, which includes an allocation of Rs 500 million, was made following recommendations from Punjab’s Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The IGP has issued directives to ensure the safety of Chinese workers on sensitive projects, including those associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other non-CPEC initiatives.
The decision comes in response to a recent suicide bombing in Karachi targeting a convoy transporting Chinese nationals. The attack, which occurred near Jinnah Airport, claimed the lives of at least three people and injured 10 others. Initial investigations revealed that the suicide bomber had waited for the convoy before ramming an explosive-laden vehicle into it, causing extensive damage to multiple cars.
Emergency teams arrived quickly after the explosion, successfully securing one of the convoy vehicles. Authorities are currently tracing details of the damaged vehicles, including their registration and engine numbers, to support the ongoing investigation. The powerful blast, heard miles from the scene, did not affect airport operations, and airport installations were reported safe.
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad condemned the attack, confirming the deaths of two Chinese citizens and one injured, while reiterating a call for enhanced security measures for Chinese nationals working in Pakistan.
