MQM-H Chief Afaq Ahmed Arrested After Criticizing Traffic Accidents in Karachi

Karachi: In a significant development, Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H) chairman Afaq Ahmed has reportedly been arrested following his public remarks against the rising number of traffic accidents in Karachi, police sources revealed on Tuesday.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Ahmed was taken into custody over a “provocative statement” made during a press conference earlier in the day. A spokesperson for MQM-H confirmed that he was detained from his residence in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), and authorities have not yet disclosed his whereabouts.

During his press briefing, Ahmed highlighted the alarming increase in road accidents caused by dumper trucks, stating that these vehicles were responsible for 92 deaths in Karachi within just 40 days. He welcomed the Sindh government’s recent decision to ban the entry of heavy vehicles into the city during the daytime, calling it a necessary step to curb road fatalities.

Last week, in response to the rising casualties, the provincial government restricted the movement of dumper trucks and other heavy vehicles, allowing their entry only between 11 PM and 6 AM.

Ahmed also addressed public outrage over the accidents, noting that angry mobs had torched vehicles in protest at several locations, including Landhi Town. He urged citizens to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from setting vehicles on fire, emphasizing that such acts of vandalism would only worsen the situation.

Furthermore, he advised the public to remain vigilant against those who might exploit the unrest for their own malicious agenda.

The circumstances surrounding Ahmed’s arrest remain unclear, and authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the charges against him.
