EU Lifts Ban on PIA Flights, Paving Way for Aviation Progress in Pakistan
Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif announced that the European Union (EU) has lifted its ban on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to Europe. The decision, made by the European Aviation Authority, follows the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) successful appeal to remove the restrictions.
In a statement, the minister celebrated the development, calling it a significant milestone for Pakistan’s aviation sector. He noted that this decision will bolster the privatization efforts for PIA, as the airline’s ratings have improved significantly. Sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), Asif said, “It is a momentous day to announce that the European Commission and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has lifted the suspension on PIA flights to Europe.”
In addition, a private Pakistani airline, Airblue, has been granted Third Country Operator (TCO) authorization, enabling it to operate flights in Europe. The minister attributed this progress to the Aviation Ministry’s focus on aligning Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. He highlighted key reforms, including the enactment of the PCAA Act, restructuring of regulatory frameworks, professional leadership appointments, and capacity-building initiatives.
The decision comes after a comprehensive review by the EU Air Safety Committee, which included on-site evaluations of the PCAA and detailed assessments of Pakistani air carriers. Khawaja Asif expressed gratitude to the European Commission and EASA for conducting a transparent review process.
He also voiced optimism that the UK and other countries might follow the EU’s lead and lift their bans on PIA flights. This development marks a new chapter for Pakistan’s aviation sector, aiming to enhance safety standards and restore international confidence.
