Death Toll Rises as Clashes Persist in Kurram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
At least 14 more people have been killed, and 13 others injured, as violent clashes continue in the Kurram District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the Assistant Deputy Commissioner, heavy weaponry is being used by both sides, escalating the conflict that began late last night.
The violence comes shortly after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s Adviser on Information and Public Relations, Barrister Dr. Saif, announced a temporary ceasefire between the warring tribes. He had claimed that the groups had agreed to a seven-day truce and the release of hostages following extensive negotiations led by an official Jirga, which concluded its two-day visit to the region and returned to Peshawar.
However, renewed clashes have undermined these efforts. Police reports confirm that violence erupted in Kalu Kunj, Badshah Kot, and Bagan Bazar villages in Lower Kurram. Armed assailants set fire to homes, killing several women, children, and elderly individuals.
The region has been reeling from ongoing hostilities. On November 24, at least 12 people were killed in clashes, bringing the cumulative death toll to alarming levels. In a separate incident, a passenger van traveling through Lower Kurram came under attack, leaving 38 people dead on the spot and several critically injured. The total death toll from this incident has since risen to 45.
Local law enforcement has been deployed to the affected areas. The Deputy Commissioner and District Police Officer have arrived at the scene, while injured victims have been transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities, including SHO Yar Muhammad, are coordinating relief efforts amid the ongoing unrest.
The situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight.
