Madhubala, the Elephant, Relocated to Safari Park After 15 Years of Solitary Confinement

KARACHI: Madhubala, a 16-year-old African elephant previously in solitary confinement at Karachi Zoo, was moved to Safari Park on Tuesday, marking the end of her long wait for reunion with her companions, Sonia and Malika, after 15 years.

The transfer was carried out with the assistance of the global animal welfare organization Four Paws. Madhubala was transported in a container lifted via crane from a truck, following extensive training to ensure she could safely enter and exit the container.

With Madhubala’s arrival, the Safari Park is now home to three elephants.

Madhubala is one of four African elephants treated in Karachi by an eight-member Four Paws team in 2022. The team addressed her long-standing dental infection and pain caused by a broken tusk, which had left her suffering for years.

Four Paws is also known for relocating Kaavan, dubbed the “world’s loneliest elephant,” from Islamabad to Cambodia in 2020. The organization continues to advocate for improved living conditions and welfare for animals in captivity worldwide.

This relocation is seen as a positive step toward enhancing Madhubala’s quality of life, providing her with a more suitable environment and the companionship of other elephants.
