Deadly Blast at Quetta Railway Station Kills 24, Injures Over 40

Quetta, Pakistan — At least 24 people were killed and more than 40 others, including women and children, were injured in a powerful explosion at the Quetta railway station on Saturday morning.

Commissioner Quetta, Hamza Shafqaat, confirmed that the blast occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m. on the station platform, where a large crowd of passengers had gathered for the departure of the Jaffar Express. Initial reports suggest the explosion may have been a suicide bombing.

Authorities stated that five of the injured are in critical condition. All injured have been transferred to local hospitals for medical care.

Security forces swiftly cordoned off the station, and police are investigating the nature of the explosion. SSP Operations Mohammad Baloch said police have obtained CCTV footage to aid in the inquiry.

Baluchistan’s Chief Minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, condemned the attack, pledging to intensify efforts against terrorism. Acting President Yousaf Raza Gillani and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also denounced the incident, with Sharif calling for a full investigation and warning that the perpetrators will face consequences.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said that terrorists aim to destabilize Pakistan but expressed confidence in the nation’s resolve to counter these threats. Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also condemned the attack, urging strict action against those targeting civilians.

The tragic blast has cast a shadow over Quetta, as officials work to determine the cause and ensure the safety of railway passengers across the region.
