Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a 100-megawatt solar power initiative for Gilgit Baltistan (GB) along with a Rs 1 billion merit-based endowment fund for students during his visit on Wednesday. The fund will support students at Karakoram University and Baltistan University, aiming to enhance educational opportunities in the region.

During a special meeting with the GB cabinet, PM Shehbaz expressed satisfaction with the rapid completion of the Bubar Model Village, which was inaugurated to provide housing for those affected by the 2022 floods. He directed the GB administration to develop educational institutions, playgrounds, power transmission, and other essential facilities in the Ghizer district to boost local infrastructure.

The prime minister also announced plans to establish Daanish Schools in GB, modeled after similar schools in Punjab, to expand quality educational resources for the region’s youth. Highlighting his commitment to GB’s development, he noted that, as Punjab chief minister, his administration had provided Rs 1 billion to support education in GB.

PM Shehbaz shared positive updates on the national economy, citing a rise in the stock exchange to over 92,000 points, increased remittances, a boost in tax return filers, and a reduction in inflation. He commended the collaborative role of all provinces, as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and GB, in national development and affirmed his government’s focus on uplifting GB, merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.

The announcements mark a renewed commitment to the socio-economic progress of Gilgit Baltistan, with a focus on sustainable energy and education.
