Maulana Fazlur Rehman Calls for Imran Khan’s Release Amid Growing Opposition Unity Talks
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Deputy Information Secretary Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai announced that JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called for the release of PTI’s jailed leader, Imran Khan. This development came during a joint media address by PTI’s Yousafzai and JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri, as the opposition parties weighed options for a united front against the government.
Yousafzai emphasized that the current government lacks public support and legitimacy, echoing Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s demand for Imran Khan’s release and signaling a potential shift towards collaborative resistance.
JUI-F’s Aslam Ghauri criticized recent parliamentary moves, claiming the government had violated prior commitments. He added that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would be meeting with other opposition leaders upon his return from an upcoming international trip to strategize further actions.
Ghauri also stressed the need for a fair and transparent judicial process for Imran Khan, questioning the validity of his prolonged detention.
The demand for Imran Khan’s release followed a meeting between PTI’s Asad Qaiser and Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad, where they discussed the potential for joint action. Sources indicated that PTI initially requested the meeting on Monday, though it was deferred to Tuesday after internal deliberations within JUI-F.
During the discussions, both parties agreed to reactivate parliamentary committees and consider launching a unified movement against the government. They also discussed outreach to other opposition factions. However, JUI-F suggested that PTI demonstrate commitment to the collaboration for effective joint efforts.
As for next steps, PTI has opted to consult with its founder, Imran Khan, and senior leadership. Both sides agreed to increase momentum upon Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s return.
