JUI-F and PPP Reach Consensus on Constitutional Amendments
Karachi, Pakistan – The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have successfully reached an agreement on a draft for constitutional amendments, following a meeting in Karachi. The breakthrough was announced during a joint press conference by JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman hailed the consensus, crediting Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for his role in finalizing the draft. “I have met Bilawal Bhutto and will meet Nawaz Sharif tomorrow,” Rehman said, underscoring the importance of further discussions with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to expand the consensus.
While rejecting the government’s initial proposed amendments as “unacceptable,” Rehman stressed the need for non-controversial reforms, urging a united approach to protect the nation’s constitution and parliamentary system.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari echoed these sentiments, stating that the PML-N will be invited to support the draft finalized by the JUI-F and PPP. “We will try to include PML-N in this consensus,” Bhutto Zardari said, emphasizing that the agreement between the two parties will serve as a foundation for broader negotiations.
He further emphasized that the primary goal is to address public issues and pursue non-controversial constitutional reforms, urging all political parties to prioritize national interests over personal agendas.
