Government Coalition Calls Lawmakers Abroad to Return by October 15 Amid 26th Amendment Talks
Parliamentary leaders of the government coalition have directed lawmakers currently abroad to return to Pakistan by October 15, sources revealed. This move comes as political parties engage in extensive consultations and public debates over the proposed 26th constitutional amendment.
According to sources, several senators and members of the National Assembly (MNAs) are out of the country. “More than 10 treasury lawmakers are abroad,” insiders shared. Among them are PML-N’s Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and PPP veteran Syed Khursheed Shah. Other notable figures on foreign visits include PPP’s Senator Rana Mehmood ul Hassan, BAP’s Dinesh Kumar, PML-Q’s Hussain Illahi, and Senator Abdul Qadir.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “If I were the law minister, I would have tried to pass the constitutional amendments before October 25.” He emphasized the government’s intent to move quickly on the amendments while also seeking consensus.
One unresolved issue, Bhutto Zardari noted, is the final decision on who will appoint the chief judge of the proposed constitutional court.
