Military Deployed in Islamabad’s Red Zone for SCO Meeting Security

The Ministry of Interior has ordered the deployment of military troops in Islamabad’s Red Zone and other key areas for enhanced security ahead of the 23rd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government. The troops will be stationed in the federal capital from October 5 to 17, 2024, under Article 245 of the constitution to assist civil authorities.

The deployment comes as VVIP delegations are set to visit the city for the high-profile event, and authorities are taking extensive measures to maintain law and order during this period. The military will have full policing powers, including the ability to act against potential threats or miscreants. In coordination with the federal police, the local military commander will have the authority to respond swiftly, including through baton charges or teargas shelling, though the government has emphasized the use of minimal force.

According to the government circular, troops will be empowered to arrest suspects and take action even in the absence of police forces if needed. The army’s deployment is in addition to the paramilitary Rangers and Frontier Constabulary already present in the capital.

This heightened security comes in light of potential threats surrounding the SCO meeting and aims to ensure a peaceful and smooth execution of the event.
