Jamaat-e-Islami Announces Nationwide Sit-Ins on September 29 to Demand Lower Electricity Prices
Lahore: Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, Hafiz Muhammad Naeem, has announced a series of nationwide sit-ins on September 29 aimed at demanding a reduction in electricity prices. The announcement was made during a press conference in Lahore as part of the ongoing ‘Haq Do Awam Ko’ movement, which seeks to provide relief to the public amid soaring electricity bills.
Hafiz Naeem noted that Jamaat-e-Islami had previously conducted a successful 14-day sit-in in Rawalpindi and a well-organized shutter-down strike, marking significant activism in Pakistan’s history. He revealed that the government had signed a written agreement promising to address their demands within 45 days, but that deadline has now passed, prompting the announcement of the next phase of the movement.
The planned sit-ins will take place across major highways in Pakistan. From October 1 to 7, Jamaat-e-Islami intends to show solidarity with the people of Palestine and Lebanon. Following this, the movement will transition into a resistance campaign.
Furthermore, Hafiz Naeem stated that between October 23 and 27, the party will gauge public opinion on whether citizens should stop paying electricity bills if prices remain high. He emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami has the potential to call for a nationwide strike and could escalate their efforts into a million-march, potentially culminating in a long march to Islamabad.
He warned the government that the movement would be “unstoppable” if their demands are not met.
