Islamabad Police Admit to Illegal Detention of Three Citizens at Sangjani Station

The Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police, Ali Nasir Rizvi, has confirmed the illegal detention of three individuals at the Sangjani police station in a report submitted to the Islamabad High Court. The incident, which occurred on August 30, has led to a series of disciplinary actions against involved officers.

In his report, the police chief stated that the allegations of unlawful detention were substantiated. Following the inquiry, the Station House Officer (SHO) has been arrested and suspended, with departmental proceedings now underway. Additionally, the inquiry officer has also been suspended, and a special investigation team has been established to look into the matter.

IG Rizvi indicated that the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for Trinol has faced similar consequences, with a chargesheet issued and an explanation sought from the Superintendent of Police (SP). A committee comprising two Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) has been formed to oversee the investigation.

During the court proceedings, the petitioner’s lawyer commended the IG for providing a thorough and candid report. Justice Aamir Farooq remarked on the importance of accountability, stating, “Good deeds should be lauded; the police chief did a good job.” He emphasized that such incidents should be prevented in the future, urging the police to maintain strict oversight.

The court also noted that the involvement of high-ranking officials, rather than lower-level officers, raised concerns. “An SP or someone else, I don’t take any name, you should look into the matter,” the bench advised. Ultimately, the court dismissed the petition, highlighting the need for systemic checks and balances within the police department.
