NEPRA Fines LESCO Rs10 Million for Failing to Implement Safety Measures

Islamabad – The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed a fine of Rs10 million on the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) for its failure to comply with safety directives.

NEPRA stated that LESCO had been instructed to ensure the earthing of 100% of its electric poles, but the company failed to meet the required standards. As a result, NEPRA has not only imposed the hefty fine but also directed LESCO to complete the earthing of all remaining steel structures within three months and the earthing of PCC poles within a year.

This is not the first instance of such penalties being imposed; NEPRA has previously fined companies like K-Electric, FESCO, and GEPCO for similar safety violations.

Earlier, K-Electric (KE) was fined Rs10 million following multiple electrocution incidents in Karachi between 2022 and 2023, which led to the deaths of 33 citizens. After rejecting K-Electric’s response to a show-cause notice, NEPRA instructed the company to deposit the fine within 15 days and pay Rs3.5 million in compensation to each victim’s family. KE was also directed to provide employment to one of the heirs of Muhammad Aslam, one of the victims.

NEPRA’s actions underscore the importance of safety compliance in the power sector to protect public safety.
