Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik Appointed as New DG ISI
Islamabad – Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and will assume the role on September 30, according to an announcement by state broadcaster PTV News on its official X account.
Gen Malik, who is currently serving as the adjutant general at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, will succeed Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who has held the position since 2021. Gen Anjum was appointed by former Prime Minister Imran Khan and had previously headed Corps V in Karachi.
Gen Anjum, commissioned in September 1988, commanded a brigade in Kurram Agency, led Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan, and served as commandant of Command and Staff College Quetta before becoming Karachi corps commander in December 2020.
Lt Gen Asim Malik, promoted to his current rank in October 2021, has had a distinguished military career. He has served with the Balochistan infantry division, commanded an infantry brigade in Waziristan, and held instructional roles at the National Defence University and Command and Staff College Quetta.
The new ISI chief is a graduate of prestigious international institutions, including Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. Gen Malik has also been awarded an “honorary sword” in recognition of his outstanding performance during his training.
