Pakistan Government Likely to Table Constitutional Amendments, Treasury Confident of Two-Thirds Majority

The Pakistan government is expected to table constitutional amendments in the National Assembly and Senate on Saturday.

Confident of having a two-thirds majority, the government has instructed treasury members to stay in Islamabad as it prepares a strategy to push the amendments through.

According to insiders, sessions of both houses will continue through Sunday. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has also called its two MNAs from Karachi to Islamabad for the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has opted not to back the government on these amendments, specifically those related to judicial reforms. The party has issued directives to its senators, forbidding them from voting without explicit permission from the leadership. A policy letter from JUI-F parliamentary leader Senator Atta-ur-Rehman instructed senators, including Kamran Murtaza, Maulana Abdul Wasey, Abdul Shakoor Khan, and Ahmed Khan, to abstain from voting unless authorized in writing.

The JUI-F leadership has warned that any senator violating these instructions could face disqualification.
