President Expands Peshawar High Court Judges from 20 to 30

In a notable development, President Asif Ali Zardari has authorized an increase in the number of judges at the Peshawar High Court (PHC), raising the count from 20 to 30.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has issued a notification confirming this expansion, which includes an increase in the number of judges, including the Chief Justice, as per the authority granted under Article 192 of the Constitution.

This decision comes shortly after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Daniyal Chaudhry proposed ‘The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2024’ in the National Assembly.

The bill aims to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court from 17 to 23, amending the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1997.

Currently, the Supreme Court comprises 16 judges, excluding the Chief Justice. If approved, the new bill will raise the total number of apex court judges to 23, reflecting a significant shift in the judicial structure.
