NEPRA Announces Significant Power Tariff Hike Across Pakistan
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a notification for a substantial increase in electricity tariffs across Pakistan, including Karachi. Effective from the April-June quarterly adjustment, the price of electricity has been raised by Rs. 1.74 per unit.
According to the notification, the additional revenue from this tariff increase will be collected over the next three months, from September to November. The hike is expected to impose an additional financial burden of Rs. 43 billion and 23 crore on consumers nationwide.
In Karachi, the situation is further compounded by recent developments. After NEPRA approved a tariff increase for K-Electric (KE) consumers, KE has requested an additional Rs. 3.09 per unit increase under the fuel charge adjustment (FCA) for July. This proposed increase would be reflected in the November electricity bills if approved, adding an estimated burden of over Rs. 10 billion on Karachiites.
Previously, NEPRA had also approved tariff hikes for KE’s fuel charge adjustments for May and June. The price was raised by Rs. 2.59 per unit for May and Rs. 3.17 per unit for June, which has already added an additional burden of over Rs. 6.2 billion on Karachi consumers.
The recent tariff adjustments are expected to significantly impact consumers, with higher electricity bills anticipated in the coming months.
