Pakistan to Enhance Weather Monitoring with New Radar and Weather Stations

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced plans to upgrade its weather monitoring capabilities with the acquisition of modern surveillance equipment. This initiative includes the installation of five fixed surveillance radars, three portable radars, and 300 automatic weather stations across the country.

The fixed radars will be strategically placed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Cherat, Dera Ismail Khan, Quetta, Gwadar, and Lahore. Karachi already hosts a compatible radar station. The portable radars and automatic weather stations will be distributed nationwide, with Balochistan receiving 105 stations, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 75, Sindh 85 (including Karachi), and Punjab 35.

Director General Sahibzad Khan highlighted that this project, funded by the World Bank, aims to provide timely insights into climate change. The installation and deployment of the new equipment are expected to be completed within three years at an estimated cost of Rs 14 billion ($50 million). The project will benefit from the expertise of both foreign specialists and local engineers.
