Balochistan Declares 10 Districts Calamity-Hit Due to Severe Flooding
August 30, 2024 — The Balochistan government has declared a state of calamity in 10 districts following severe rainfall and flooding that have wreaked havoc across the province. The announcement, made on Friday, comes as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported significant loss of life and extensive damage to infrastructure.
The affected districts are Qalat, Ziarat, Sohbatpur, Lasbela, Awaran, Kachi, Jaffarabad, Usta Muhammad, Loralai, and Chagai. In response, the PDMA has instructed district administrations in these areas to initiate relief efforts for those impacted.
The severe weather, which began on July 1, has resulted in at least 29 fatalities and left 15 individuals injured. The ongoing rains have caused widespread damage, including the destruction of 858 homes and partial damage to 13,896 others. Additionally, significant harm has been reported to infrastructure and crops across the affected regions.
Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and mobilize resources to support recovery efforts in the stricken districts.
