Surveillance Measures Blamed for Internet Slowdown in Pakistan, Adverse Economic Impact Expected
As internet users in Pakistan grapple with ongoing access and speed issues, the Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP) has attributed the problems to increased security and surveillance measures, cautioning that these could have severe economic repercussions.
WISPAP Chairman Shahzad Arshad expressed frustration over the deteriorating situation, stating, “It’s a very discouraging situation for our customers. Many are leaving smaller ISPs due to poor service quality. If this continues, we could see a mass exodus of businesses from Pakistan.”
Arshad highlighted that internet speeds have decreased by 30% to 40%, significantly impacting businesses and individuals reliant on stable connectivity. He warned that online and electronic-related businesses, crucial to the country’s digital economy, are “struggling to maintain operations,” with the slowdown threatening their survival.
The remarks come amid continued silence from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), as millions of Pakistanis face difficulties accessing internet services, particularly on mobile data in certain regions.
