Women Allegedly Raped by Ride-Hailing Service Driver in Lahore

In a troubling incident that raises serious concerns about the safety of women using both online and offline transport options, a ride-hailing service taxi driver allegedly sexually assaulted a female passenger in Lahore. The attack reportedly occurred in the presence of her female friend before the driver fled the scene, according to Geo News.

The police have registered a case based on the victim’s complaint and are actively working to apprehend the suspect using a partial vehicle registration number provided by the victim.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the driver completed the ride and dropped off the woman and her friend at their home. However, instead of leaving immediately, he followed them inside the house and allegedly committed the assault.

The ordeal began when the victim booked an online taxi after an evening out with her friend, expecting a safe and convenient journey home—an everyday practice for many commuters in Pakistan. Upon reaching her house, the driver requested a glass of water. Thinking nothing of the seemingly harmless request, the woman went inside to fetch water, leaving the door open behind her. This proved to be a critical mistake, as per the FIR.

The driver allegedly forced his way into the house and assaulted the victim while her horrified friend watched helplessly. The victim’s parents, who were nearby, arrived at the scene and confronted the alleged attacker. They managed to beat him up but chose to let him go to avoid further trauma and potential dishonor to the family in a conservative society like Pakistan, where rape victims often face social stigma.

The perpetrator seized the opportunity to flee, leaving the women and the victim’s family in shock and disbelief.

This incident underscores the vulnerability that many women face daily, even in supposedly safe and familiar environments. The case has sparked a renewed discussion on the safety measures needed to protect women using ride-hailing services and other forms of transportation.
