US Senate Bill Proposes Cutting Aid to Pakistan Over Aggression Towards India
The United States Senate has introduced a bill that proposes cutting off aid to Pakistan if it takes aggressive actions against India.
Titled the “US-India Defense Cooperation Act,” the bill was tabled by Republican Senator Marco Rubio.
This legislation underscores the importance of strengthening ties with New Delhi, elevating India’s status to that of key U.S. allies like Japan, Israel, South Korea, and NATO members, particularly concerning technology transfers and security assistance in case of threats.
Senator Rubio emphasized the need to expedite the transfer of excess defense articles to India for the next two years and proposed granting India the same status as other U.S. allies. Additionally, the bill advocates expanding International Military Education and Training Cooperation with New Delhi.
One significant aspect of the bill is its call for the U.S. to provide a limited exemption for India from the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions.
2This exemption would allow India to continue purchasing Russian equipment currently in use by its military without facing U.S. sanctions, recognizing the strategic importance of India in regional security dynamics.
