Supreme Court Ruling Boosts PTI’s Position in Parliament
In a significant political development, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has overturned the Election Commission’s denial of reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed Sunni Ittehad Council. This ruling positions PTI to potentially become the majority party in the National Assembly.
As a result of the Supreme Court’s decision, the ruling coalition has lost its two-thirds majority in the lower house of Parliament. Despite this, the coalition maintains a simple majority with 210 seats, while the opposition now holds 125 seats.
Previously, the Election Commission of Pakistan had allocated reserved seats as follows:
- Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N): 14 seats
- Pakistan People’s Party (PPP): 5 seats
- Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F): 3 seats
In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly:
- JUI-F: 10 seats
- PML-N: 7 seats
- PPP: 7 seats
- Awami National Party (ANP): 1 seat
In the Punjab Assembly:
- PML-N: 23 seats
- PPP: 2 seats
- PML-Q: 1 seat
- Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party: 1 seat
In the Sindh Assembly:
- PPP: 2 seats
- Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM): 1 seat
The Supreme Court’s verdict is expected to reshape the political landscape, potentially altering the dynamics within the National Assembly and beyond.
